Assembling drones with members of European Parliament
On 15 October 2024, Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) took part in Wings for Europe hands-on drone assembly event, demonstrating their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s defense. Their participation underscored the urgent need for European nations to increase funding and scale up production of cost-effective defense technology.
During the event, MEPs engaged in various activities—they assembled drone frames, soldered components, and piloted drones using simulators. Additionally, they gave interviews to media helping raise awareness of the cause. They showed their support for Wings for Europe by purchasing merchandise. One Parliamentarian went even further. After personally funding a drone he named Olivia, he committed to delivering a batch of Wings for Europe drones to Ukraine himself.
The Growing Importance of Drones
Drones have become an essential tool in Ukraine’s fight for survival. Due to shortfalls of Western weapon supplies , Europe must step up and mass-produce drones to meet growing defense needs. At the event, WFE experts provided insights on various aspects of drone warfare, covering everything from assembly and operational use to strategic doctrines across nations and international organizations.
Why European Drone Production Matters
While Russia, China produce drones at an immense scale, European production remains very much limited. In fact, Russia and China manufacture millions of drones annually. Ukraine is struggling to catch up. If Europe is to strengthen its defense and support Ukraine effectively, it must invest in large-scale drone production.
Recognizing this urgency, Wings for Europe is committed to expanding drone production across the continent. As a dedicated volunteer organization, we aim to host more assembly events, make more drones, recruit additional volunteers and advocate for a rapid increase in European drone manufacturing.
